Special Review: Left 4 Dead 2 Demo

So, I ordered Left 4 Dead 2 today so I could try out the demo.  I didn’t buy it just so I could try the demo I knew I’d be buying the game anyway and if I got to try the demo early? Then that’s just fine by me.  I thought I’d write out my initial thoughts on what I found.

The demo starts out like in the first game, four characters trapped in a city overrun by zombies (this one is obviously New Orleans of course).  First thing I noticed that was new was a silenced machine gun which I of course chose.  Killing the zombies of course is unchanged, what would we expect them to change? Zombies are zombies.  Then of course the first of the different zombies appeared, the zombie with armour.

The zombies in this game do seem vastly improved.  The armoured zombie for example is a police SWAT team member with full body armour.  The only way to kill them is to hit them in the face with your gun and shoot them in the back.  Then there is a new zombie that I can only think of calling the puker? I’m sure there is some official name for her.  If you’ve seen the latest video she’s the freaky one that has her jaw hanging loose with green ooze hanging out.  She vomits all over the floor with poisonous ooze so you have to move fast to keep away from that.  The Jockey is a new one that I found very annoying but he’s very affective in his ability.  He jumps on your back and forces you to walk straight into the horde of zombies…what a bitch.  There are some more but I’ll leave you to find those ones.

The most fun thing I found of course had to be the melee weapons.  In the demo I’ve managed to discover a nightstick, frying pan, guitar and machete.  The best of these has to be the machete for me.  When the horde came running I just loved to swipe the machete around cutting off heads, watching arms flying off the zombies and the blood covering my screen.  That was just awesome and for fans of such movies as Braindead? It’s a dream game.  Speaking of the horde I found it to be improved in this demo (meaning there are MORE zombies appearing all the time).  I found it awesome at one area to walk through a door and have to fight off so many zombies that the floor was pretty much covered in bodies and blood was everywhere.  Now THAT is what you call a zombie massacre and of course this is just the demo.  I can’t wait to get the chainsaw and fight off a zombie horde; they won’t stand a chance against me.

There is no doubt that I love zombie games.  I’m looking forward to Dead Rising, I bought the original Left 4 Dead when it first came out and I’m still playing it AND I’ve played most of the Resident Evil games.  I just can’t get enough of them, so this game is a very welcome addition to my collection.  Demos always show just part of how good a game is so when the full version is released in just under three week I’m expecting to be just as impressed with it as I was the demo.
