‘Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire’ Review (PC)

If you are a fan of role-playing games, then Baldur’s Gate is one that you’ll no doubt love. That is of course if you have played it. Pillars of Eternity, and now Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire are a love letter that reminds fans of just how good Baldur’s Gate and its sequel were.

Pillars of Eternity 2

In this sequel to the 2015 Pillars of Eternity you take to the high seas to search out a newly awoken God of light so that you can retrieve your soul. Having not played the original Pillars of Eternity, I will admit that this was a little over my head, but Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire does well to introduce new players into the world.

Impressively the game also has a level of challenge that has options for different types of players. There are the hardcore players who want the complete challenge, or the beginners who would rather concentrate on the story. Even with the aim of concentrating on story though the important elements of the RPG are still there, and the complicated nature of the game’s character system is still in place.

What is important when it comes to a game like Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is that the character you create has to be fully created and adapted by the player to meet their needs. Again, there is a lot behind the scenes that allows the hardcore player to do a deep dive into their character and have full control. Again, people who are more of a beginner are catered for too and helped through the process of levelling up their party and being able to enjoy the actual story.

One thing that people have to be ready for with Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is that this is a big game, with over 40+ hours of game-play available. This is a game that will eat your free time up, and you’ll love every minute of it.

What makes a good RPG is that your choices have an effect on what will happen as you progress through the game. This is shown through conversation choices being restricted by your character and its levels, and of course the choices that are made. If you make a move that a character you meet dislikes, this will have consequences down the line, so it adds to the impact of what the character does.

If you are a fan of RPGs then Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a very good game not only for hardcore RPG gamers, but also those that want to find a starting point to play these games. It is advisable of course to play the first game, but if you choose to skip it and go straight to this one, you won’t be disappointed. Just be ready to lose all your spare time in this one, though you won’t be complaining about the time you put into it.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is available on the PC now.
