‘Ash vs Evil Dead 3×08 – Rifting Apart’ Review

When it comes to Ash vs Evil Dead, there is one character other than Ash (Bruce Campbell) that has been through the same hell that he has. The Oldsmobile is one of the true heroes of the Ash vs Evil Dead world and proves it this week.

Ash vs Evil Dead

To save Brandy (Arielle Carver-O’Neill) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) goes to extreme measures to pass into the world of the dead. This leaves Pablo (Ray Santiago) to open the rift when he is needed, though not surprisingly, things never go exactly to plan.

People may feel nostalgic for Drag me to Hell this week as the dead fight to survive beyond the rift. This is especially the case when they are dragged screaming while demonic hands drag them underground.

When it comes to being a hero, Ash isn’t always the one to make a stand, but it is admirable that this time he is. Fighting to save his daughter and Kelly he doesn’t even question what he has to do, he takes the action that is needed.

The world beyond the rift gives the show the ability to bring back not only Kelly and Brandy, but also Dalton (Lindsay Farris) who manages to get his heroic moment. He is outshone though by the real hero of this episode and that is the Oldsmobile.

One thing I’ve found about this season of Ash vs Evil Dead is that it was held down a bit by the fact we knew that Brandy would always be questioning if she should trust her father or not. Now that this has been put to rest, it almost feels like a breath of fresh air.

A perfect example of the show being unleashed is the Oldsmobile scene. Even outshining Bruce Campbell, himself, it is the vehicle that saves the day and provides the high point of the episode. Its one of those moments that makes the show special, that a car from the Evil Dead movies could mean so much and have an impact in the important moments of the show.

At the end of the episode, one of my predictions came true, but there is still hope for a return for the character who is still stuck beyond the rift. Really the fact they are still trapped should be no surprise, especially with the situation with Ruby (Lucy Lawless). There is still a feeling though that all will be fixed by the end of the season.

Now that we are heading towards the end of the season, it does feel like the scene has been set for the battle between Ash and Ruby once again. No doubt the final two episodes will provide plenty of blood, guts & gore and we’ll all be left happy in the end. Though it does seem that Ruby has a few tricks up her sleeve that she is sure to use before she finally gives up the fight.

This episode of Ash vs Evil Dead feels like it is back on track after making some questionable decisions. Even with the decisions I may not have liked, Ash vs Evil Dead is still a must see show every week and brings us the Deadite fix that we need.

Ash vs Evil Dead is available on Virgin Media video on demand in the UK.
