‘Legion 2×01 – Chapter 9’ Review

Legion is a show that is unlike any other, it proved that in the first season, and now it is back the first episode has arrived with a mind-blowing bang. If you expected any semblance of normality from this show, you’ll be disappointed. One thing you can be sure of is Legion is back and better than ever.

Legion

David (Dan Stevens) is back, but in the time, he has been gone things have changed for his friends. With Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban) still at large, Division 3 need all the help they can get. The question is, just what is David hiding?

What this episode has proven to me is that Legion is my favourite show, unless Twin Peaks returns for another season of course. A lot has changed in the world of Legion between season one and two, with the most important change being that everybody works for Division 3 now. We see a nice explanation as to why this came to be in this episode.

This episode is really a quick reminder of where Legion left off last season, and the start of the next chapter. I don’t really want to spoil much of what happens as you really do have to go into the episode cold to fully experience it. I will let one little secret out though, if you were a fan of the dance sequences from earlier episodes, you won’t be disappointed with this one.

One of the problems I had with the end of the first season was just how they would manage to keep Aubrey Plaza in the show, but thankfully this has been handled well. We get glimpses of Farouk, but we also get to see Plaza and Jemaine Clement too, which makes it feel that Farouk is building an army. He also appears to be causing some kind of plague, which is the main reason that Division 3 are so keen to find him, in fact he is public enemy number one.

Another nice touch for this episode is that we get to visit old friends. This includes Cary and Kerry Loudermilk (Bill Irwin and Amber Midthunder) and Dr. Melanie Bird (Jean Smart). Most importantly though we see how the relationship between Syd (Rachel Keller) and David is now strained. She can tell he is hiding things, and we get some answers about why at the end of the episode.

Fans of Legion will be happy with this episode as it continues to be exactly what you expect from the show, and it isn’t diluting the weirdness to make it more accessible. This episode is simply a mindf*ck of epic proportions that will leave the audience not only happy, but also leave them wondering what the hell they just saw.

Legion is one of those shows that is something special, and there are moments that I would compare it to Twin Peaks with just how good it is getting. There are definite vibes that things are going to get very weird, but also very good. Now to see if David’s father can make an appearance, and if Patrick Stewart will be the one to play him. That would just be the cherry on top of the perfect cake.

Legion Season 2 episode 1 will be shown in the UK on Fox TV April 17th.
