‘Cat Quest’ Review (Nintendo Switch)

If there is one thing that will get people’s attention on the Iinternet it’s cute cats. This is why when I loaded up Cat Quest I was a little worried about what I would find. To my surprise what I was presented with was a game that has the right level of nostalgia, and as the title suggests, cats. Cat Quest is an open world RPG based in a world full of cats. You play a character in search of his sister, and this adventure has brought you to the continent of Felingard. It isn’t long before you find that the evil Drakoth is spreading his evil here, as well as holding your sister hostage.

Cat Quest

I’m one of those people who put way too many hours into Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES so Cat Quest tapped into my feelinsg of nostalgia straight away. That isn’t to say that this is a retro style game, as isometric view and the cute graphics are cartoony and diverse enough to make the world you explore interesting.

What is apparent from Cat Quest is that indie studio The Gentlebros. are fans of roleplaying games. There are certain references in the game to Skyrim, among many other games, and yes, that includes Zelda. What Cat Quest does though is to make things a little simpler, and in turn more fun.

Cat Quest is more of a casual type game that is easy to dip in and out on, and this helps with the grind that is required, especially when you start. Each mission that you choose to do comes with a suggested level, with the main quest missions normally at a higher level than you are. This pushes you to grind the side missions, which is where the charm of the game really comes alive.

What these side missions bring are pun-heavy stories where you help the cats who live in Felingard in a variety of ways. Many times, you search for something they need, which will lead you to a dungeon which you then explore, and destroy the beasts who dwell within. These dungeons aren’t really that complicated but that is the point really. The game is made out of bite sized chunks of story that keep you entertained, and does it in its own cute little way.

Another aspect to keep you grinding on the side missions are the new weapons and armour that are made available. While you level up you get more health, mana, and strength with weaponry and armour adding to that. There is also a magic system that has a similar upgrade mechanism that builds up as you become stronger.

What makes Cat Quest so good is that it never really overstays its welcome, or risks becoming boring. The variety of monsters grow, and get tougher as you explore Felingard and the challenge becomes greater. Even though there is a grind, it never really becomes a chore. The game introduces mechanism of adding story, pushing the side mission grind, then fighting the bosses early so as the player you know what is expected of you. It is a process that works well.

If you are a fan of roleplaying games and want something light, full of puns, and full of cats then Cat Quest is perfect for you. More of a brawler than a real roleplaying game, it has its heart deep in the world of fantasy though, and a basic roleplaying system that will keep you coming back for more.

Cat Quest is available on the Nintendo Switch eShop now. The game is also available on PC and PS4.
