‘Offensive Combat Redux!’ Review (PC)

With the release of Call of Duty: WWII we spend a lot of time trying to stay alive, be a skillful player and grind our way up to better weapons and scorestreaks. That can be serious stuff, especially once ranked games begin. What about a first-person shooter that just wants to be funny, and just a little bit offensive? Say hello to Offensive Combat Redux!

I’m a fan of a lot of the big shooters available, this includes the likes of Borderlands 2, Overwatch, and of course Call of Duty. I won’t say I’m the most skillful player but I recognise a good shooter, and what makes them fun. This is why Offensive Combat Redux! is a pleasant surprise.

Offensive Combat Redux! is based on the original Offensive Combat which was a browser based game back in 2012. What we have now is a game downloadable from Steam updated to fit the “Redux!” addition to the title.

The game modes available include single player options featuring bots which can attack in waves or just give you general practice for deathmatch style matches. Online multiplayer features deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and king of the hill. This is what we come to expect from a first-person shooter like this. It is when you get into the game itself though that things become a little different.

The first interesting thing is the ability to dress up your character. There is an impressive selection of options for you to mix and match. This includes clowns, voodoo dolls, hotdogs, and pretty much anything you can think up. You can even dress up as Donald Trump is you really want to, but this may mark you out as a target right from the start. Once you’ve collected enough in-game currency you can also select your weapon and upgrade it to make it deadlier. There is an impressive weapon tree for the upgrades that adds to the interest, as well as an impressive array of murder tools to attack the other players with.

The game itself is an average run and gun type shooter, and for the most part the shooting is handled well. The guns feel good, and it isn’t long before you are gunning down anything that moves. What makes Offensive Combat Redux! different is the ability to taunt your opponent as they lay dead on the floor. This includes such insults as teabagging (just check out the screenshot above!), with added music just to add insult to injury. You are even given extra points as an incentive to use the taunts against your opponents.

While Offensive Combat Redux! may not be able to compete with the likes of Call of Duty or Overwatch, it was never really meant to. This is just a fun game where you shoot people and taunt their bodies while dressing up as silly as possible. It is fun, it manages to be funny, and it doesn’t ask for much skill. In the end it does what you would expect from a game, so what more can we ask?

Offensive Combat Redux! is available on PC now.
