‘Game of Thrones 7×06 – Beyond the Wall’ Review

If there is one thing that you can be sure about, Game of Thrones has one character that can have very annoying episodes. Beyond the Wall is important to the show, is very exciting, and shows what it does best. The only problem is, Sansa (Sophie Turner) is the worst.

Game of Thrones

With Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and his group heading beyond the wall, it seems that Littlefinger’s (Aiden Gillen) games have worked their evil between Sansa and Arya (Maisie Williams). When the Jon’s party manage to capture a Wight, they are soon surrounded, leading to a loss that hits Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) hard.

It doesn’t take much thought to figure out that there would be deaths in this episode of Game of Thrones. The whole power of the undead army is that they overwhelm and overpower. They have the numbers, and being dead they don’t have the weaknesses of man. What is surprising though is that they capture a Wight so easily.

Before this though, we get to see interactions between the group members which fans love. Tormund (Krostofer Hivju) and The Hound (Rory McCann) have one of the best conversations, which of course revolves around Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). Tormund’s crush is cute, and The Hound’s experience of her just adds to the infatuation.

When the episode moves south back to Winterfell, we see the worst of the episode. While Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams do play their parts well, the scenes don’t feel right. We’ve seen Sansa make it clear to Littlefinger that she does not trust him, yet he has managed to get into her head. His revealing of her complicity in her father’s execution has weakened the relationship between her and Anya, and created fear.

When it comes to Littlefinger, we know his motives and what he is aiming for. While there is little chance of him taking the Iron Throne he is still playing his game to put himself in the most powerful position he can. He doesn’t care about Sansa, we’ve seen the evidence in the situations he has put her in. He just knows how to play her, and make her believe that he has the best intentions for her, even when he is creating all of her problems for her.

With the events north of the wall, the greatest loss has now happened. The death of Viserion is a blow that finally shows Daenerys at her weakness. This is one of her children, and perhaps the pain will be far greater when she realises what is still to come. We saw in the closing moments of the episode that now she is not the only one with a dragon. The tide is truly turning against man.

While Beyond the Wall may be a good episode, it also shows the show has weaknesses. Having built up Sansa and Anya to be strong characters, they have now taken away some of that strength (from Sansa at least). While it may fit a Littlefinger story, but it doesn’t fit Sansa’s. While this is annoying, we just have to live with it, even if the fans of the show may not like it, or welcome the return of the gullible Sansa who truly is the worst.

Game of Thrones airs in the UK on Sky Atlantic at 9PM on Mondays.
