I never thought I’d really be into survival games, but looking at my Steam library tells a tale of zombie outbreaks and dinosaur training. With the likes of H1Z1 and ARK in my playlist, Conan Exiles probably fits right in.
My style of survival is to be a loner though, and to enjoy the ability to explore a world at my own pace. This is one reason that being able to have a single player experience in Conan Exiles interests me. Not only that, but the ability to set your own server settings adds to the fun. These are something that aren’t really new though, you can do it in other games when you are the controller of the realm.
With Conan Exiles, it feels like a lot of the attention went to the ability to be nude, and to see certain aspects of the male anatomy in all their glory. I witnessed this interesting aspect when I first loaded up the game, and there were numerous articles and videos that had a lot of fun with the ability to enhance the character’s penis. There was also the ability to make it much smaller of course.
The game itself has been in Early Access for a while now, and is making the move towards Xbox One in the future. While it is losing the functionality that made it so newsworthy, that doesn’t mean that it is losing the only thing that made it interesting; far from it.
Conan Exiles provides the player with a world that has lore to discover, strange creatures to attack and even humans to fight against. The main premise is that you and the other humans are all trapped in the area you find yourself in, and you must fight for survival.
The first area you find yourself in is a desert type area which leads into a jungle. This jungle features some interesting but easy to handle creatures that allow for you to concentrate on grinding up some levels, and building your base in which you will return when you die (as long as you place a bed there).
Initially progress can be quite slow, but this is also a chance to learn the mechanics of the game. When you encounter harder enemies, it is easy to get out of your depth, but this s a sign that you aren’t ready for that certain area of the map yet. Conan Exiles, as with many survival games is about strengthening up your character, building up an arsenal than bashing your enemies faces in.
In the future, there will be even more to the game, but now there is a good chunk of functionality on offer. Creating buildings and filling them with your armoury and decorations is a fun part of the game that you can easily get lost in. What holds this fun back in many ways is that the game is still Early Access and there are many things that are still being ironed out.
During the initial release, there have been issues with performance but there is a good level of patching taking place. While it would nice to see some stuttering handled with quicker, it is fair to say that the developers do have a lot of work to concentrate on, and tend to focus on optimising the network code more.
What I would say about Conan Exiles is that it has a lot of polishing still to do. With added functionality, more varied monsters, and performance updates this will be a survival game worth checking out. If you want to try the game out early, then it is fairly stable and is fun. Just beware the fact as always that this is Early Access, and still has plenty of work needed on it before it reaches its potential.
Conan Exiles is available on PC now, and is coming to Xbox One in the near future.
