Here’s Why You’re Wrong To Look Down On PC Gamers

Over the years, gaming has become an increasingly acceptable pastime. It is now enjoyed by the “cool” kids as well as the slightly geekier demographic. But there’s one area of the industry that still tends to gain a negative response from large sections of the general gaming audience, and it’s PC gaming.

Well, if you’re one of those that thinks PC gaming has little to offer, you’re sorely mistaken. As a gaming fanatic, I personally love console gaming too. Then again, there’s also a special place reserved in my heart for the PC variant too.

Whether you’re a casual gamer or a celebrated geek, PC gaming has plenty to offer. Here are just some of the top reasons to rethink your gaming prejudice.

  • Unlike console gaming, PC titles often rely on elements outside of killer graphics. Simple games like Rise and Shine have a special charm and are particularly enjoyable when you just want to escape reality for a little while. Of course, popular titles like Minecraft have transitioned into the world of consoles. However, if simplistic games with extended shelf life are your thing, there’s no doubt that this is the best choice.
  • Similarly, PC games tend to cover a far wider spectrum of genres and subjects.     Let’s face it; consoles almost always focus on the biggest sellers. While there are clear reasons for their popularity, it does limit the opportunity for niche games to enjoy success. However, simulators and unique titles are far more accessible on the PC market.
  • In addition to covering a greater variety of gaming categories, the PC market is accessible to new designers and indie publishers. If this sounds like a career path that may interest you, you can learn more at http://gamedevelopment.tutsplus.com/. Alternatively, you could just enjoy the new releases that other indie makers are producing. That’s not to say it’s impossible to find title on console games, but the quantity is far greater with in the PC arena.
  • Mass multiplayer titles are undeniably better on PC. World of Warcraft and titles of this ilk underline those sentiments perfectly. Quite frankly, first person shooters are probably the only mass multiplayer games that transfer well to consoles. Then again, it could be easily argued that they’re even better on the PC. After all, Counter Strike is still the granddaddy of the genre.

  • PC gaming can feel far more personalized too. The social aspects of seeing consoles enter the family living room are undoubtedly great. Nonetheless, there are times when you just want to lock yourself away in a room and escape human life. PC gaming is still the best place to do that.
  • Following on from the above point, you can also personalize the gaming environment to make it more comfortable. Whether it’s a gaming chair, a new table, or simply changing the layout doesn’t matter. Having a greater sense of control undeniably aids the gaming experience for many years to come.
  • Accessories are quite limited with console gaming. But the range is often far larger for players on the PC market. From headsets to keyboards, the bigger variety of solutions means that you can find the one that works best for you. Moreover, the fact that PCs are more universal regarding the ports often leads to cheaper costs too.
  • PCs are far more versatile in terms of the operating systems. As far as gaming consoles are concerned, hard drive sizes are the only real difference from one model to another. PC gamers can use websites like http://www.blueauracomputers.com/ to create the perfect machine for their needs. Not only can this make your budget work harder, but it can result in a better experienced for the type of games you want to play.
  • On a similar note, PCs can be upgraded with new parts as time progresses. This means that your machine can be improved as technology evolves. Likewise, the technology used will last for generations. Conversely, most gaming consoles have a shelf life of a few years before they are cast into the shadows by the newest version. Don’t believe me? When was the last time you played your PS2?
  • If you do ever come to sell your PC, you’ll probably find that it has held value better than your outdated console too. Try selling your Nintendo Wii on eBay, and the sale price will barely cover your delivery costs. Even if it means dismantling the PC to sell parts individually, you’ll often see a far better return.
  • Even if your PC is built specifically with gaming in mind, there’s a good chance that you will use it for a variety of other tasks. Whether it’s completing work, managing your accounts, or checking Facebook doesn’t matter. The fact that your PC serves additional purposes outside of gaming is a bonus. Some of the modern generation consoles may try, but (Netflix aside) they fail badly.
  • Games are cheaper. The newest titles will still cost you a little bit of money, although less than the console equivalents. There are often discounted titles at     http://store.steampowered.com/ and other distributors too. As long as your PC has the right graphics card and memory, your games will be far less vulnerable to freezing. Not only that, but the disc trays are often in more protective housing. If this results in fewer scratches, you’ll be far less likely to need replacement discs.
  • In my humble opinion, you tend to encounter far fewer idiots online via the PC. Xbox Live and the Playstation Network are packed with people that make me cringe. While the world of PC gaming isn’t void of them, the frequency of encountering them is far less.

Quite frankly, this list could easily go on for another 25 bullet points. But the above list should hopefully highlight that PC gaming does have plenty of benefits, even if you do still love your console gaming too.

Maybe I’ll see you online sometime soon. Game on!
