‘Telltale’s Batman Episode 5: City of Light’ Review (PS4)

Telltale’s Batman has come to an end with City of Light, and in many ways, has delivered what we expect from the company. With plenty of uses of the new features brought to the Batman game, this episode does feel to be a step forward, but has Telltale’s Batman Episode 5: City of Light fully given us the Batman experience we wanted?

Batman City of Light

Depending on your choices from previous episodes there will be different events in the finale. For the most part though the time has come to take on Lady Arkham herself, and to save Alfred who has been taken prisoner.

This story is obviously not taking any risks in terms of where it will take Batman, but I’m sure we already knew it wouldn’t. What we do see though are interesting origin style stories that put certain characters in positions to be in a second season, if we are lucky to get there.

When it comes to the confrontation with Lady Arkham this does have an interesting feel of a final boss, with the quick time events coming in thick and fast. Again, don’t expect too many surprises with how this ends, in the end this is a Batman/Bruce Wayne story and the characters around him take a step back to give him top billing in the action.

One thing that I noticed from playing on the PlayStation 4 version was that the initial release of this chapter did seem fairly buggy. This included a situation where Batman was apparently fighting the Invisible Man (or just a set of floating eyes and a mouth). Obviously, these bugs will be fixed with an post-release patch, but it does feel like the game may have been rushed out a little too quickly.

When looking at Telltale’s Batman Episode 5: City of Light and its place in the season as a whole, it does end things as expected. The story itself is interesting, especially with the way it deals with the Wayne family, and how things may not be as they seem. I’m not a hardcore comic book fan, so I don’t know how the game compares to what these fans expect. For those who are more casual fans, I’m sure they won’t see any weaknesses in the plot.

In terms of the game’s engine, while there have been some interesting additions such as the investigation mode, I think there is still some ways to go. With the new processing power given with the current generation consoles and the PC, the game really doesn’t make use of this potential. This move in technology though may not come until Telltale leave the Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 behind.

Even with the cracks that are starting to show in the Telltale model for adventure games, I still enjoyed Batman. This was an origins story that was restrained by the constraints of the Batman lore itself. Could they have completely ignored the original Batman and created something new? I truly doubt it, and that is what holds the story back.

Having said that, I enjoyed Telltale’s Batman Episode 5: City of Light and the previous episodes, and I do want to see a season 2. This will obviously appear later in 2017, or later, so there is plenty of time to bring a new Telltale Experience, and a braver story to its players.
