‘Ash vs Evil Dead 2×09’ Review – Back to the Cabin

After a week’s break Ash vs Evil Dead is back, and Bruce Campbell’s iconic character is showing how idiotic he can be once more by going ‘Home Again’. With plenty of homages hidden in this one, Ash and our other heroes are going back to the cabin where it all started, and giving Ted Raimi a chance to bring yet another character back.

Ash vs Evil Dead

In an effort to fix the events of last episode, Ash, Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo), and Ruby (Lucy Lawless) travel back to the past before Ash first encountered the Necronomicon. Aiming to make sure he never read from the book, it soon appears that they are too late, or somebody else has read from it already.

If you’ve seen the Evil Dead films it isn’t hard to figure out in the timeline, just where the group appears. This has certain repercussions, but also provides an interesting situation for Ash to be in. What makes this episode so enjoyable though is the fact it is so entrenched in Evil Dead lore, and works in Army of Darkness in some fun ways.

If you are a fan of Ash’s adventures in the past you’ll be see the little references here, and they are nicely interwoven into the story. The kitchen scene is an example that I’m sure fans will enjoy. This episode though is the first time we’ve really seen Ash touch on the subject of his time travelling past, and even pay homage to some of the scenes from that film.

Although this episode does come after such a tragedy, it isn’t one that allows the audience to dwell on the sadness for too long. With references to Back to the Future, and nice little touches on the side effects to time travel, it is actually a fairly intelligent dealing with time travel (though Ash still acts like the idiot that he is). What really will work well with the fans though is the comeback once again of Ted Raimi.

Giving away the fact that he is once more in the show may be giving a little too much away, but I’m sure fans of Raimi will forgive me for giving the fact away that he is in this episode. I won’t say much more about it, but it is interesting that we see a prequel of kinds to the Evil Dead, and maybe hints that Ash may actually be at fault for some of the things that led to his own actual introduction to the story.

Something I’ve often mentioned with this season of Ash vs Evil Dead is the restriction on the show based on the episode length. A lot happens here, but I have to admit, there just isn’t enough time. I can understand that the end is set up to tease the finale of the season, but I’m so eager to see the big battle that was built up, that it almost feels unfair that I’ll have to wait another week.

Next week we see the end of Ash vs Evil Dead season 2, and hopefully it will live up to what has been set up. There are still a few things that need cleaning up, and a big battle to come. What will happen when all the gore has hit the screen? Who knows, but I’m sure we all hope that Ash actually manages to do what he travelled back in time to do. If not, then there will be some sadness to come.

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 is available on Virgin Media VOD now.
