‘Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two’ Review

After the events of the first season of Gomorrah, it was clear that a second season was already planned for. Now that it is here with Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two we get to see the continuation of the story of Ciro (Marco D’Amore).

Gomorrah

Continuing where the first season finished we find Don Pietro Savastano (Fortunato Cerlino) escaped from jail, his son Genny (Salvatore Esposito) in critical condition in hospital and Ciro fighting to pull the warring families together. With an alliance formed to fill the void the Savastano family left, can they build a success of will Don Pietro drag back the power he has lost?

If you watched the first season of Gomorrah then you’ll know what to expect from Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two, and thankfully it delivers. There is a slow start as the pieces are put into place for this season, but after the first episode it is easy to see where things are leading. The battle between Ciro and Don Pietro is a dangerous game of chess which involves too many pieces.

The beauty of Gomorrah is how it builds up its storylines in a deliberate and confident way. We as the audience feel that we should side with Ciro, but it is hard to do that when we see the things he does. We can tell he is a character that is due for a downfall, but how it will come all part of the game, and Don Pietro is a true master of the game.

Along with the battle with Ciro, it is interesting to see Don Pietro’s relationship with Genny, how he views him, and how this affects Genny’s view of the events that are taking place. Since the last season, Genny has grown as a leader, but with his father ignorant of this fact and constantly pushing him away, it is easy to see that this will be Don Pietro’s fatal flow.

While Ciro battles Don Pietro and his family, he also manipulates the other gangs in the alliance to do his will. Watching Ciro at work is a beautiful thing to watch, weaving his Machiavellian plans that do seem to work. It is obvious throughout the season though that there are too many fingers in the pie of power, and the alliance is doomed. This is the main focus of Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two and it is a beautifully woven story that opens up before us.

Again, if you’ve seen the first season you’ll know what to expect from the acting quality, and Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two doesn’t let us down at all. The true powerhouse of course is Marco D’Amore who plays Ciro, easily the most complicated character, and the actor manages to convey many of these in his silence. We can feel his character falling apart, and the weight of the deaths around him pushing him to the edge. There is almost an expectation for him to finally give up.

Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two is a continuation of a show that is a must-see. If you’ve not seen the first season it would be best to go back to that one first, so you are up on the story. When you’ve caught up and know what is going on, Gomorrah – The Complete Season Two is a very good continuation of a show you have to see.
