‘LEGO Marvel’s Avengers’ Review (PS4)

When it comes to LEGO games they are pretty reliable. They have that humour that we can expect, they understand the audience they are catering for and they know how to treat the licenses they are entrusted with well. Which is exactly what they have done with LEGO Marvel’s Avengers.

While we’ve seen Marvel characters in LEGO games before, they’ve not been based on the popular movies and not had a focus on The Avengers. This has changed with LEGO Marvel’s Avengers as we play through the first film, and Age of Ultron with all the characters we expect from the movies. After these have been completed we are then offered a few extra levels based on the movies that have led up to, and followed the Avenger movies.

If you’ve played a LEGO game before you know what to expect. You’ll fight waves of enemies, destroy LEGO objects and find pieces that can be put together to form another object that will be used to help you progress through the level. A boss battle is also included, though nothing is thrown at the player that proves too taxing.

Gameplay once again takes place between two characters, and with the theme of the Avengers being co-operation the characters can now work together with a special move which features the superheroes famous moves. Whether these be Iron Man’s lasers, Captain America’s shield or Hulk’s strength this always proves to be a spectacular moment during battle.

When these characters interact, a weakness is also revealed though and that is in the things the characters say. While it is a nice idea to have dialogue from the movie, the problem in this game is that what these moments happen they are obviously sound bites from the movie and stand out when other voice talent talk. The voice talent isn’t bad, but the movie dialogue tends to feel pasted in, which is a shame.

When it comes to the open world available to LEGO Marvel’s Avengers this is where the game tends to shine. With around 100 characters to unlock (this include variants of some characters) there is plenty to unlock. The open world maps are impressive and a joy to explore, as well as hunt down random crimes on. A highlight for me was using Agent (Peggy) Carter as an additional character in the game. The fact that Hayley Atwell as well as Clark Gregg and Cobie Smulders recorded new dialogue for the game is very obvious. As is the fact that Ashley Johnson who was in The Avengers movie also returned to add some dialogue.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is a fun addition to the LEGO games and works well with The Avenger’s movies. There are moments where it truly shines and you can’t help get caught up in the fact that you are being the Incredible Hulk, or Scarlet Witch (who kicks ass) and it really hits home that you are playing at The Avengers.

There are also moments though were things feel slightly repetitive and wearing a little thin. Thankfully though the excitement of The Avengers is much more enjoyable and prevalent than the repetitive moments making LEGO Marvel’s Avengers a game well worthy of fans of both LEGO games and the Marvel Universe.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is out now.
