‘WWE: Night of the Champions 2014’ Review

When looking at the pay per views that WWE provides the fans with through the year Night of the Champions should be one of the most prestigious, and maybe they believe this is to be the case when they ask Brock Lesnar to actually turn up.  WWE: Night of the Champions 2014 comes at a time when WWE have a lot to prove to the fans, especially having the most important belt around the waist of a part-time wrestler, so was it a good night for the champions?

Looking at the matches it probably comes as no surprise that AJ Lee vs. Paige vs, Nikki Bella is one of the weaker matches of the night, which is a shame because of the inclusion of two of the better divas on the roster (AJ Lee and Paige).  Rusev vs. Mark Henry was another forgettable match which is a shame because Rusev is actually a talented fighter, and the inclusion of Lana is never a bad thing.

Moving to the better matches we had the Usos vs Goldust and Stardust who just happens to be one of my favourite wrestlers of the moment.  It’s nice to see Goldust continue with his career in this way creating a good tag team with his brother.  It must seem odd to them that after all of the years of having Goldust as one of the strangest characters WWE has every produced, his brother outdoes him with Stardust.

Shaemus vs. Cesaro for the US Title was easily one of the best fights of the night and the two wrestlers have excellent chemistry in the ring.  The way these two are able to verbally hype up their matches too is always fun, these two are two of the best the company has with Shaemus’ brawler style working well with the purity of the wrestler that is Cesaro.  We need more matches like this.

Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz for the Intercontinental title was a match that was above average, and is yet again typical of these two fighters who further examples of the mid card strength WWE has.  It’s a shame really that as we move up to the main event fights there is a lack of quality because of the repetitious nature of the WWE style.  It’s nice to have Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose creating some of their own brand of chaos though.

When we finally get to the main event with John Cena and Brock Lesnar it is a shame that this match was somewhat lacking.  There was an expectation that Cena would win this as the comeback match, though of course the Money in the Bank element was there as a safeguard against having a title change.  Sad that the Money in the Bank used to have that potency of feeling like a confirmed change, but now is just used as a plot point.

Being able to look back at this match it really is bad that this was the last time Brock Lesnar, the champion of WWE has defended the belt in such a big match.  I think it’s obvious that we are going to see Lesnar keep the belt till Wrestlemania, but how many times will he fight until then, and will it be anybody other than John Cena?

WWE: Night of the Champions 2014 is not the worst WWE event of 2014, but it is also not the best.  With average matches that were more about fuelling storylines and keeping the status quo it is a shame that an event like this shows the weakness that WWE falls into as of late.  With Survivors Series teasing big changes for the company there is hope, but we’ll have to wait to see how the stories go.

WWE: Night of the Champions 2014 is available in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray from 24th November.
