‘WWE: Money in the Bank 2014’ Review

Another year passes and WWE: Money in the Bank 2014 arrives to continue the pay per view event where the magical briefcase is passed onto the latest hopeful who gets an almost certain chance to be champion.  Featuring two ladder matches this year as is the usual style now the question is does WWE: Money in the Bank 2014 look to fun and actual matches or does it concentrate too much on story line?

The good news for the most part is this year the Money in the Bank event actually kept the story lines that have bogged down the product mostly in the background and looked to create more of an event featuring (shockingly) wrestling.  Highlight for me has to be that we finally have Goldust and Stardust together who are arguably my favourite tag team right now, Cody has really found his edge with this character.  It’s a shame they were against Ryback and Curtis Axel at this event, but their matches were actually good and helped establish the Stardust character.

Other highlights (other than the ladder matches) were as usual The Usos defending their belts against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, Paige defending her title against Naomi and the two heavy weights Big E and Rusev battling it out like two huge rhinos in a surprisingly good match.  There were some matches that didn’t work for me (Summer Rae vs. Layla with guest referee Fandango) but for the most part the card for WWE: Money in the Bank 2014 felt to be put together for more entertainment value, which is something that WWE can often forget.

Moving to the two ladder matches my favourite of the two by far was the actual Money in the Bank match (Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Rob van Dam vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Jack Swagger vs. Seth Rollins).  This match was not only used to strengthen the story line for the Shield feud but with performers who have had a lot of experience in Money in the Bank matches the action was actually very entertaining.  Looking back at the match as I write this it makes me miss Ambrose who I hope will be returning soon, WWE need his insanity back.

The championship match (John Cena vs. Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton vs. Cesaro vs. Alberto del Rio vs. Bray Wyatt vs. Kane) was another entertaining match and is would have been surprising if it wasn’t really.  Whether we like it or not Cena and people like Randy Orton are the top performers in WWE right now and adding people like Roman Reigns, Cesaro and Bray Wyatt into the mix refreshes the feel of the action.  We may not like the usual ending to the match, but the action itself can’t really be faulted.

To say it was a surprise that WWE: Money in the Bank 2014 was as good as it was says a lot about the product really.  I know I say this a lot but I do think 2014 is a bit of a struggle for the company.  Now that the almost obsessional advertising of the WWE Network is getting annoying (at $9.99 don’t forget) the writers really need to get back to making the show fun.  WWE: Money in the Bank 2014 proves that they can still do that…now to get more like this.

WWE: Money in the Bank 2014 is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK now.
