‘WWE: Ladies and Gentlemen, My Name Is Paul Heyman ‘ Review

I will start this review by stating that I’m a Paul Heyman guy, I have been ever since I discovered ECW.  I can’t say it was that easy being an ECW fan in the UK, they had enough problems getting on television in America so I was lucky to be able to catch some of the matches, but before the end I had most of the DVD releases that came out in the UK and I was one of the obsessed.  This is why I looked forward to watching WWE: Ladies and Gentlemen, My Name Is Paul Heyman because to me the man is a legend.

To make the review easier to write, I’m just going to call the set My Name is Paul Heyman, but the first thing that will surprise some in the documentary is just where Heyman started off.  As a teenager and as a wrestling fan his climb to wrestling immortality began in the WWE, or as it was known back then the WWF/WWF.  Getting himself a camera and sneaking into the events he managed to get to the ring to take pictures, and it started off there.  To some it’s surprising that he started in the territory that in the future would be his enemy, but of course he was in WCW as well.

Before he appeared in WCW though he first proved himself in AWA where the character of Paul E. Dangerously was born.  As well as the documentary about Heyman’s career My Name is Paul Heyman includes promos from AWA, WCW and ECW with only a few matches included (because they included Heyman in them).  Watching these promos you see Paul Heyman evolving into the character that he would become and of course the manager that will go down as one of the all-time best.

For fans of wrestling history I’m sure one of the questions is going to be what about ECW? The answer to this is that a big chunk of the documentary actually looks at what happened there, including its death.  We’ve all read the rumours and stories about what went on, we’ve seen the interviews and we’ve seen the documentaries but here we finally see Paul Heyman himself go into depth about what he did to keep the company alive, how the company was connected to WWE and how WCW tried to steal wrestlers.  This includes the Todd Gordon controversy, though it’s nice to see they appear to be on better terms now.  What you see from My Name is Paul Heyman though is what the man put into the company and how he gave it his all.  We see the bad side of what he did and the good, nothing is held back.

My Name is Paul Heyman is a release for fans of the manager but really it’s not for those looking a set of wrestling matches.  Personally I loved watching the promos they’ve included and really enjoyed watching how Heyman evolved his character, and that is why this is a very good release.  It’s interesting to see how many people are huge fans of Heyman and who respects him, it’s also amusing to see the “heat” Jerry Lawler seems to have with him (which could be just show of course) but most importantly this is a must buy for all the Heyman guys and ladies out there who bought into his cult of extreme, and love everything he does.

WWE: Ladies and Gentlemen, My Name Is Paul Heyman is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK August 4.
