The Walking Dead Season Two – Episode Two: A House Divided (Xbox 360) Review

Oh Walking Dead you know just where to stick that dagger don’t you? When I finished the first episode of The Walking Dead Season Two I should have known what was coming, it was just a way of easing you into the trap before it ripped your heart right out of your chest.  Looking at reviewing The Walking Dead Season Two – Episode Two: A House Divided it’s hard to not add spoilers, but I know full well that you have to go into this game without previous knowledge of what is to come, to get the full effect.

When you finish this episode you’ll realise that The Walking Dead is truly back on form.  The first episode was good but it’s arguable that the true emotions hadn’t kicked in yet, other than the fact you hated the new people because they distrusted you so much.  In episode two as they start to trust you, you in turn begin to care about these new characters and empathise with them.  Each have their own little storyline, and Telltale Games have crafted them to drag you into the group and make you feel a part of them.  For most of the episode the fact that you work as part of the team is evidently to pull you even further into caring about these people, before the metaphorical bombs of emotion start going off and your heart starts to sink.

Episode Two’s title in many ways is a foreshadowing of what is to come, A House Divided.  It’s interesting though that there are more than one “houses” as more groups come into play and old faces make a return.  Although it would not be fair to say which old face comes back, this is one of the bombs that goes off in the storyline, especially for Clementine.  With returning characters like this it leads to story elements from the past season to return and your memory needs a little kick to remember just what this character did before.  As always the choices you make, especially around the groups and people within then shape what is to come in the future.

I will admit that there were elements from the first episode of season two that I didn’t look forward to, I thought they were too cliché in style but I did decide to keep on going, knowing what was to come.  Now these story elements are playing out and revelations from the past episode are leading to important plot points in A House Divided I would say this is where The Walking Dead Season Two is hitting its stride, especially when it comes to emotional impact.  Where the emotions were quite dulled in episode one, in A House Divided Telltale Games are going for the big impact and boy does it hit hard.

The Walking Dead Season Two – Episode Two: A House Divided has left me looking forward to the next chapter in the tale more than ever now, where episode one was still very good it didn’t really have those moments where you were dreading what you could almost feel was coming.  I found A House Divided had more impact because the intensity is increased, emotions are at a high and poor Clementine is put in the middle of all of the chaos that is building up.  Now to see where the game takes us next, because I think it’s fair to say that in Telltale Games we trust.
