Game Review: Deadfall Adventures (Xbox 360)

deadfall

When it comes to first person shooting games now people tend to think of the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield where the action is mainly based on multiplayer battles and the solo campaigns are somewhat of an afterthought.  Sometimes we get lucky though and we get something like Deadfall Adventures which while it may not be the best game available, looks to bring the story back to shooting games and add some puzzles to the action.

The storyline for  Deadfall Adventurest focuses on James Lee Quatermain the great grandson of the famous Allan and his fights against Nazis, Russians and mummified guardians.  The action takes place all over the world, from Egypt to the Arctic, jungle locations and deep within derelict temples all in the aim to find the Heart of Atlantis.

The game itself is very much a first person shooter in style, though it tends to focus more on story than the actual shooting.  The levels follow the same path, with action sequences, exploration and then an element that is more of a puzzle, which will unlock the item you have searched for.  As you reach these moments in the game you can tell they are coming as the mummified guardians start to attack.  These creatures are fairly easy to defeat with the novelty that you have to aim and focus your flashlights beam on them to first weaken them and then shoot them dead.  They do tend to become tiresome closer to the end of the game, but I often find that they are useful when they attack your other enemies which are either Nazi soldiers or the Russians.

Deadfall Adventures does feel like you are playing an Indiana Jones game, but this is forgivable when they are working off the same sources, the pulp adventures of action heroes that are larger than life.  One highlight for me, which is an obvious reference to Indiana Jones is a minecart chase which is actually done well, though it does show a weakness in the game, the weapons suck, or at least the effectiveness of the bullets you are firing.  The aiming can be very touch and go at times, and forget aiming with the shotgun, just shoot in the general direction of the enemy and hope for the best.

Graphically I would call Deadfall Adventures adequate, especially on the Xbox 360.  For me the strength in the game was the storyline, which is very cliché and very Indiana Jones in style, but that is the point really.  If people look at the game and complain that it wants to be Indiana Jones then they are not taking notice of the fact that yes, of course it is…that is kind of the whole point.

So is Deadfall Adventures a good game? My answer to that would be yes.  Don’t expect anything like the latest Tomb Raider game or Naughty Dog’s Uncharted, but look for a fun shooting game that actually take the time to bring puzzles to the mix? Then Deadfall Adventures will allow you to kill a few hours on it.  It’s a fun game with an adventurous story that yes, it may have its issues but which games don’t?

Deadfall Adventures is released November 15th on Xbox 360 and PC.
