Are you ready for more One Piece? If the answer you give to that question is “what’s One Piece?” then you obviously need to read my review for One Piece: Collection 1.  If you already know what One Piece is then you’ll know that the United Kingdom are finally getting the anime show in its full uncut form, and now we have One Piece: Collection 2 to take a look at.

In Collection 2 we are straight back to Luffy and his battle with Don Krieg.  Once this is out of the way in true Luffy fashion Sanji agrees to join the crew as the new chef and it’s off to find Nami who has disappeared.  This leads into the epic origin story for Nami as they travel to her home and meet the fishman Arlong.  After a long battle with Arlong and his strange group of fishmen it’s off to Loguetown, the final resting place of Gold Roger.  To complicate things though Luffy is finally a wanted man, meaning he now has ever bounty hunter and marine after his blood.

Collection 2 sees an upping in pace to the story of Monkey D Luffy as his enemies are bigger and tougher to beat.  This makes for huge battles, but also some annoying episodes for me, especially the battles with Arlong.  Luffy spends way too long outside of the action which while having a point to it, I found myself sighing and just wanting him to get on with it.  Some of the episodes in the Arlong storyline do also feel to drag on, but as this is the story of Nami and how she became who she was, I do see the importance; it’s just hard to ignore the fact that there is a lot of time wasting, even in scenes when the tempo should really have upped its pace.

Once we get past this though the show feels to get back on track as the group of pirates (namely Luffy and Zoro) annoy the marines and Luffy becomes one of the most wanted pirates on the seas.  This sees a return to the action of characters from the past, which includes my favourite character Buggy the Pirate Clown who while still short, does find the rest of his body.  This all culminates in another huge battle that takes place in Loguetown where we also meet Smoker, who looks to be another reoccurring characters.  Smoker interests me, as the cigar smoking marine who can turn into smoke is a taboo character, it would be interesting to see if he even makes it into the cut version (I’m guessing now).  There is also the introduction of another character who is quite shadowy when we first meet him, known as “Dragon” who will be very important to the show no doubt, but that is all I will say for now.

With One Piece: Collection 1 I did feel that the end came quite abruptly and I was left wanting more, and to be fair it was in the middle of a battle.  With One Piece: Collection 2 though we end at Episode 53 which does feel like an end in a chapter of the One Piece story.  The adventure has escalated, Luffy and his group are on their way to the Grand Line and he now has many of his enemies right on his tail.  Now I can’t wait for the next collection of episodes to be released.

One Piece: Collection 2 is available now on DVD, and as an extra treat here is a gallery of some of the action:
