After years of waiting for the official information on the next-generation Xbox, rumors will finally be laid to rest on May 21 as Microsoft gives its official word on the system. Thus far, the company has been extremely tight-lipped on just what the console will consist of. Although some information has been leaked, nothing has been confirmed, and the world will remain in the dark until May 21.

Rumors can be nasty things, but when it comes to gaming systems, what does a little gossip hurt? Here are the rumors so far – the ones that, according to Kotaku, are pretty much verified, and the ones that are speculation.

The New Xbox

Probably true

  • Under the hood — The box will run hardware that’s custom: 1.6 GHz, 64-bit, 8-core CPU, DirectX graphics, DDR3 at 8GB and a hard drive of 500GB.
  • The interface — However people feel about the Kinect it appears that it will be an integral part of the new system. There is a very good possibility that the Kinect will be necessary even to turn on the console.
  • The regular controllers aren’t likely to change much on the new system. According to TechRadar.com, the 360 controllers are incredibly popular amongst console and PC gamers alike. However, according to inside sources that talked with Kotaku, the old controllers will not work with the new console.
  • New save system — As with Sony’s new system, the old save-game style will probably be dispensed with in favor of an instant-save ability. Every time you indicate that you’re leaving your game, such as when you turn it off, the system will freeze that state until you come back to it.
  • Arriving this year — The new console wars will commence by the end of 2013, with both the PS4 and the new Xbox releasing around the holiday season.

Maybe true

  • Cannot play used games — There have been some rumors that the new console will not allow owners to play used games. According to Internetproviders.com, this may be a result of efforts to combat piracy.
  • The console requires a constant Internet connection — This one is still speculation. While it’s possible that Microsoft could require this, there are plenty of people with bad Internet connections who play console games. For accessing streaming and downloads, this would make sense. But to require this just for gaming would be a strange, and likely unpopular choice for the company to make.

What about games?

There hasn’t been a whole lot of information on what games will be available on the new console, but there are a few possibilities.

Rare

Rumors say that Rare is creating a game slated for the next-generation Xbox. It makes sense that Rare would want to get in on the new system right at the start, especially since the company has been focusing on Kinect Games recently. An exclusive from the “Call of Duty” creators Respawn, a company created by two of the original “Call of Duty” creators, is rumored to be working on a title exclusively for the new Xbox. According to Digital Trends, the tentative title for the release is Titan.

Only a short wait

It’s slightly incredible that there are so many detailed rumors for a system whose creators have yet to announce its existence. There will likely be many sighs of relief and some yells of frustration when Microsoft finally tells everyone whether any of this is true.
