From watching this trailer I can understand why this film became a hit. South African comedy can be fairly unique and this film looks to show that off with pride, lets hope it becomes a success around the world. In the United Kingdom we’ve done this story quite a few times but I like the different feel this has from something like East is East for example, fans of that film should give this a look through it definitely looks to have that feel to it:
Ahead of its European Premiere at the London Film Festival the makers behind MATERIAL, South Africa’s biggest box office draw for three decades, have released a new ‘international’ trailer
Set in Johannesburg, the film stars sand-up comic Riaad Moosa as Cassim, a dutiful Muslim son who works alongside his traditionalist father (played by Vincent Ebrahim star of The Kumars at No.42) in the declining family-run textile store. However, Cassim is secretly honing his skills as a stand-up comic. This is definitely not the kind of material Cassim should be working with and when his father finds out suddenly life isn’t a funny business anymore…
MATERIAL is written and directed by Craig Freimond and produced by Ronnier Apteker and Robbie Thorpe. It stars Vincent Ebrahim (The Kumars at No.42), South African comedy star Riaad Moosa (Long Walk to Freedom), Joey Rasdien (Bunny Chow) and Denise Newman (Shirley Adams, Disgrace). Executive producers are Tendeka Matatu, Ivan Epstein, Stephen Cohen and Anant Singh.
There are two further LFF screenings of the film:
Sat 13 Oct at Cine Lumiere, 1pm and Mon 15 Oct at NFT3, 1.15pm.
