Hatchet 2 Review By Kristian J. Hanson

My inaugural review I wanted to do a movie that I personally love for reasons I can explain. I saw the trailer for Hatchet when I was sitting in my bunk in Iraq and couldn’t wait to see it on the big screen. With the recent release of Hatchet 2 in the UK and owning a signed copy from the cast right now in the US, I wanted to review it for all of the UK horror fans biting at the bit to watch the awesomely goretastic sequel to Adam Green’s original Hatchet! (Not sure if it’s still out on release in the UK now, but it did get a limited release -pzomb)

Starting with the Geek-O-Meter, which will be based out of 10, being an uber-geek out, to a 1, which is barely wanting to type a single word, I rank this a 9 out of 10 on the Geek-O-Meter.

The movie released here in the states on October 1st to a lot of controversy being un-rated and all. My friend and I hunted the movie down at the Ontario Mall in Southern California and watched this amazing slasher flick on the big screen before it was ripped from theaters the following morning never to see a big screen again until you wonderful fans of the UK got it in theaters just recently. All right, enough kiss assing and more review, here we go.

The movie picks up literally where the last one left off with Mary-Beth in the water swimming away as Joel David Moore bleeds out in the boat. Being saved by Jack Cracker, he takes her back to the shack where we get our first laugh out loud moment, not to ruin it for those who have not seen it but just remember the “drinks his own piss” line from the original.

Leaving the swamp we see her next at Reverend Zombies shop where she talks to him about trying to go back and find her brother and daddy. I personally love Danielle Harris, but seeing her as Mary-Beth compared to the original actress never felt right to me. I truly wish the original actress would have come back for the sequel, but Miss Harris is a nice replacement even though to me, she never quite fit the role.

Once seeing Rev. Zombie she goes to her house where her uncle great Director of Child’s Play Tom Holland comes to try and take her away. He gives her strict orders to stay away from Rev. Zombie but does she listen? Of course not, she wants to find her daddy and brothers body and kill the monster Victor Crowley aka Hatchet-Face.

The movie of course goes back to the swamp with an all new cast of individuals you cannot wait to see die. From Cletus, to the Asian guys twin brother from the original who tries to speak with a French accent, to the “Token” black guy, to Mr. Tom Holland himself. This movie has the gore and laughs to keep everyone interested and seeing the unrated version in theaters, I honestly cannot see where the MPAA says it was too violent for an R Rating. It is a mindless Slasher flick from a director who is a fan of the genre and is knew what he wanted. I honestly applaud Adam Green for sticking to his guns and releasing it the way he did. So UK fans please see it in theaters, you will not be disappointed with the abundance of gore, humor and death. US fans such as myself, go buy it on DVD or Blu-Ray because it is one to own especially with the extras on the Blu-Ray. As usual Adam Green and Ariescope go above and beyond for their fans with a nice transfer and awesome behind the scenes information. The Geek-O-Meter again is 9 out of 10 and the only reason it is not a perfect 10 is because I like character continuity in sequels, and Miss Harris as Mary-Beth just didn’t mesh perfectly with me in the end.
