So, the latest movie of the moment finally has a trailer out.  I have to admit it looks good, the trailer does it’s job and makes you look forward to seeing the movie.  “Critics” and anybody willing to pay to see 15 minutes of an actual film have also got to see more of it, but thats the problem for me.

We have all of this hype over a movie we’ve not actually seen? people go crazy about how good the 3D looks, how amazing the CGI looks, it goes on and on and on.  What worries me though is have anyone mentioned the story?  I’ve not seen much talk about how good the characterisation is or how strong the back story is or if the script is good.

All I seem to see is how pretty it looks, how the 3D is cutting edge and how this will be the movie of the year.  I don’t know, I have my issues with this…

I must again stress that I’m looking forward to this movie, but I’m not buying the hype.  James Cameron is a good director, he directed Aliens, which is a movie I personally love.  He also did Terminator and Titanic, which are two movies that are part of movie history, they are classics.  Cameron can make good movies and he probably has a good movie in Avatar, but I think we are buying into the movie too soon.

What I want is this….stop talking about the trailer, stop humping the 15 minute (or however long it is) preview that is playing in IMAX cinemas at the moment, WAIT for the full movie.  There already seems to be a backlash against the movie from some areas, but I’m not going to buy into the hatred of the movie just yet, I just need proof of what Avatar is trying to sell to us.

The problem to me is Avatar in itself seems to be an Avatar of a real movie.  It’s a CGI representation of a real movie.  What is an Avatar? “An avatar is a computer user’s representation of himself/herself or alter ego” …see, thats what the movie is.

So as a movie fan I’m going to wait for the actual movie to come out, and see just what it is…after the hype and protectionism of the “concept” of Avatar has died down.  It’ll probably be a good movie, but not what people are trying to sell to us…we shall see.
