Watchmen

Watchmen

Watching Watchmen was a unique experience for me.  I’m a huge fan of the graphical novel and I’d read all the news about the movie and what it was missing, but I still watched with an open mind.  I liked how a lot of the scenes were recognisable as being recreated from page to screen, but things bugged me.

Now, I’m not saying the movie is bad, because honestly I liked it, I liked it a lot.  The things that bugged me were the directors style.  Zack Snyder is a man who loves his slow motion.  Even if he was filming a person going to the toilet, he’d film that scene in “slo mo” and make us watch every facial expression they had.  Slow motion is okay, I guess, but in the end how many times do they have to include it in the movie?  I bet if they sped up the slow motion segments they could cut the movie by about half an hour and included even more from the novel.

Now, enough bitching about slow motion shots.  What I liked about the movie were the characters.  I think they got the characters right, and understood Rorschach was the main character of the story.  I think I liked him in the movie even more than I did in the novel.  Yes, he’s a psycho. Yes, he does bad things, but so what? He’s the hero, he’s seen things that have turned him into the guy he is.  His explanation of the birth of Rorschach really explains how somebody could turn into the guy he did.

I’d love to comment on the end of the movie, but if anybody reads this I don’t want to spoil it for them.  I’ll just say that I don’t agree with what they did, but is it better than having a giant squid? Yes, I believe it is (and thats coming from a fan of the novel remember).  The giant squid scene in my opinion would have been impossible to film and sell to the watcher, especially those people who had not read the novel.  So to me the ending works, and thats all that matters I guess?

As I end this review I’ll have to add this is not my views on the directors cut, as in the UK they have not released it yet.  I’m probably going to have to get it from America or something so I can see if there are any improvements.
